Brings real-world examples to learning.
Dr. Ludwig Jansen van Vuuren is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Oral Rehabilitation, Faculty of Dentistry, at the University of Otago. His academic background includes the degrees BTechDent, NatDipDentTech, MTechDent, and a PhD on "Dental occlusal stress" completed at the University of Otago in 2023. As Course Co-ordinator, he oversees undergraduate courses including DTEC303 Professional Practice and DTEC202 3D and Digital Removable Prosthetics 2 in the Dental Technology programme. His primary research interests lie in dental occlusal stress, the mechanical properties and microstructure of biomaterials and dental hard tissues, and dental biomaterials.
Key publications by Jansen van Vuuren include "Acid-resistant glass ionomer cements: An assessment of their mechanical properties, fluoride ion release and protection to surrounding tooth surfaces from acid challenges" (Journal of Biomedical Materials Research Part B, 2025; co-authored with K. C. Li and others), "Measurement of tooth displacement" (Journal of the Mechanical Behavior of Biomedical Materials, 2023; with W. A. Jansen van Vuuren, J. M. Broadbent, W. J. Duncan, and J. N. Waddell), "Stranding of a Hector's beaked whale (Mesoplodon hectori) from South Australia unearths novel additional teeth" (Marine Mammal Science, 2023; with C. M. Kemper, C. Loch, J. Austin, and D. Stemmer), "Maximum voluntary bite force, occlusal contact points and associated stresses on posterior teeth" (2020), "The influence of undercut depths on the accuracy of casts fabricated using polyvinyl siloxane impressions" (Heliyon, 2020; with V. L. Mudliar and others), "Chemical and mechanical properties of snake fangs" (Journal of Raman Spectroscopy, 2016), and "Structure and mechanical properties of normal and pathological mineralised elephant ivory" (Journal of Zoological and Botanical Gardens, 2015; with L. J. van Vuuren and others). In addition, he presented his PhD research at the Faculty of Dentistry's Clinical and Research Excellence Symposium in 2023.
